The principle is that of a classic roller shutter whose slats are cut to increasing or decreasing lengths to fit the slope of the roof. The box remains horizontal, installed as a lintel or in a high frame. The side tracks follow the vertical on one side and the oblique on the other.

The maximum width of a trapezoidal shutter is often limited to about 2 m by most manufacturers. Beyond that, it is necessary to consider two coupled shutters, which poses an alignment issue with the lower carpentry if they do not have the same dimensions.

Less common, this system reverses the logic: the box is placed under the window and the curtain rises to obscure the opening. The motorization pulls the slats upward, which requires a motor sized to overcome gravity continuously.

This mechanism has a clear advantage for gable triangles whose peak is at the top. The slats gradually engage in the narrowest area, reducing asymmetric friction. However, the low box requires integration space under the window sill, which is not always available on an existing masonry wall.

Material of the slats and thermal insulation on a triangular window

The choice of material directly influences the thermal performance and the weight of the curtain, two critical parameters for a non-standard geometry.

  • Double-walled aluminum slats with injected polyurethane foam offer the best compromise between rigidity and weight. They limit the load on the motorization, a sensitive point when the curtain experiences asymmetric lateral forces in the oblique tracks.
  • PVC slats are lighter and less expensive, but their transverse rigidity is lower. On a wide trapezoidal shutter, they may bend at the longest slats and rub against the track.
  • Solid extruded aluminum slats, used on security shutters, significantly increase the weight of the curtain. Their use on a triangular window is only justified in a proven burglary risk area.

From an insulation perspective, the additional coefficient (Delta R) of the roller shutter depends on the airtightness of the box as much as on the material of the slats. A poorly insulated box on a triangular gable window, often exposed to prevailing winds, cancels the expected thermal gain. The airtightness of the box takes precedence over the material of the slats for overall energy performance.

For ascending shutters, the motorization must keep the curtain in the raised position without it descending under its own weight. A mechanical brake integrated into the motor or a compensating spring system is then necessary.

  • Wired motorization: simpler installation, but no feedback on the position of the curtain.
  • Radio motorization with automatic end-of-travel: precise adjustment of high and low positions, useful when the travel varies from one track to another.
  • Solar motorization: relevant on a well-exposed gable, it avoids running cables through an existing wall. The photovoltaic panel is fixed to the box.

In a renovation project where running electrical conduits through a gable wall is complex, solar motorization eliminates this constraint while remaining compatible with common home automation systems.

Dimensioning a roller shutter for a triangular window is not just about taking measurements. Compliance with DTU 36.2, the choice of the direction of movement, and the calibration of the motor determine the durability of the installation as well as daily comfort.
